Fans of the Type-Moon universe (Fate/Stay Night, Kara no Kyokai, Tsukihime) will be saddened to hear that the third installment of Battle Moon Wars has been delayed. The original planned release date was December 12th 2006, but for reasons unknown to me, the new release date is now set to February 2007.

So what exactly is Battle Moon Wars? It’s a roleplaying game made by the doujin group named “Werk Zwei“, with various well known characters appearing from the 3 Type-Moon novels such as Archer, Saber, Nanaya Shiki, Emiya Shiro, Arcueid, Ciel, and more. The gameplay itself is reminiscent of the battle systems of both Final Fantasy Tactics and Super Robot Wars – players of the above two games will immediately notice the mass similarities between the three titles. Battle Moon Wars itself is a full Japanese game with no current English support, so players with little to no knowledge of the Japanese language will a bit of trouble going through the game. Thankfully, Psieye of the Beast’s Lair community has provided a rough translation of the purchasable skills / abilities for each character.

Those that aren’t familiar with Kara no Kyokai but have been delving into the Type-Moon world can liken it to Tsukihime, as Kara no Kyokai is a 900 page book that was written by Nasu prior to the Tsukihime visual novel. The main character has the same first name as Tsukihime’s Shiki Tohno/Nanaya, and also shares the exact same abilities (Eyes of Death Perception), although Shiki Ryogi’s proficiency with the ability is far higher than Tohno or even Nanaya’s skill ever reaches during the Tsukihime novel with the Eyes of Death. Aside from that, Kara no Kyokai and Tsukihime take place in the same world as each other, and the novel makes many references to Tsukihime characters and events. For example, we learn that Shiki Tohno’s glasses that were given to him by Aoko in Tsukihime was in fact stolen from Aoko’s sister, Aozaki Tohko.

Opposed to Tsukihime’s Shiki who is outgoing and thoughtful, Kara no Kyokai’s Ryogi Shiki is cold and tends to keep to herself. The Ryogi family attempted to create Human beings that exceeded normal Humans, and to accomplish this, they trained their children in various martial arts and fencing, and also made them split their personalities. They believed that by using this method, one personality could be an expert in one subject while the other could be master other subjects. Shiki was no exception to this, and she had a masculine and feminine side that switched places with each other (ref: Moonlit World). A car accident causes Shiki to fall into a deep coma, and when she awoke from it, she had gained the “Eyes of Death Perception” ability, although she believed that her masculine personality side had died during the accident. For those unfamiliar with the Type-Moon world, users of the Eyes of Death Perception are able to see the “lines of deaths” on every object that has a concept of death. By cutting these lines, the user is able to perform extrodinary feats such as breaking down a stone wall with a mere knife. When used on a living creature, the user is able to sever nerves and limbs easily by cutting the lines of his target. More experienced and skilled users such as Nanaya can also see the “dot” of death on their target, and by piercing this dot, the user can permanently erase something’s actual existance.

Whereas Nanaya/Tohno Shiki needs to “comprehend” and understand the target before he can see the actual dot of death and pierce it (ie: during his fight with Nrvnqsr Chaos, Shiki couldn’t see Nero’s dot of death until Nero stupidly explains his 666 beasts ability to Arcueid which Shiki overhears), Ryogi in her 3rd personality needs no such information to accomplish her goals. The main difference between Tsukihime Shiki and KnK Shiki’s however, is that Nanaya/Tohno seems to kill “existance”, while Ryogi more or less kills the origin of her target. It is believed that because of this, Ryogi has a fairly harder time when she needs to cut inanimate objects. It’s also interesting to note that Ryogi Shiki does not in fact possess the ability to see the dots of death. Once one gains the Eyes of Death, the lines and dots of death are forever seen by the user, and the only way for them to turn their ability “off” is via death or by wearing glasses imbued with the Mystic Eye Sealing Mahou (The type that Shiki Tohno and Rider from Fate/Stay Night wears). Confused? My head hurts.
(Note: I myself am not 100% sure if the information that I put up above is entirely correct, KnK is some confusing stuffz!)

Ok, so that ended up being waaaaay longer than I had expected. Please excuse the mess of grammar my ramblings have no doubt created – I’ll go through it again later today with a revision after my classes O_O. As always, this is merely a rumor, so you should take it with a grain of salt. I can only hope that the rumor turns out to be true though. Those of you that are interested in learning more about the Type-Moon universe should check out Fuyuki City as it is perhaps the largest and most comprehensive English archive of the Nasuverse.

I just saw Bleach episode #106, and while the content itself was still the mindless Bounto filler, the intro and outro scenes were fully replaced by yummy previews to the first Bleach movie in the making, Memories of Nobody. Looking at the preview screens, it would appear that Rukia’s Zanpakukto, Sode no Shirayuki, will be animated for the very first time. Zaraki Kenpachi, Kuchiki Byakuya (seen with his Bankai active), Soi Fong, Toshiro Hitsugaya, Abarai Renji, and a very large number of other characters also made several appearances throughout the OP and ED of episode 106. Excited? I know I am – I’m one of those huge Bleach fans that still watch the series even though it’s descended into the pits of hell known only as “Fillers”.

Plot summary (courtesy of Cinemasie):

In Karakura Town, there has been a sudden outbreak of unidentifiable spirits called “blanks” (vacant souls). In the skies of Soul Society, the real world has been reflected. A mysterious female shinigami called Senna has appeared before Ichigo. A man named Ganryu leads a group called the “Dark Ones” who wield a dark power which they use to put their formidable plan into motion. Will Ichigo be able to prevent the collapse of the world?

That day, the first incident occurred in Karakura Town. A group of “blanks” were loitering in town. As substitute shinigami Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki went to investigate, a female shinigami named Senna, who carried a zanpakutō called “Mirokumaru” (bodhisattva re-incarnation) appeared. However, she offered no explanation of her identity, and evaded the question of her squad assignment by replying she forgot.

At the same time, disaster also struck Soul Society. The scenery of the real world was suddenly projected into the skies of Seireitei, where the shinigami reside. An official first class warning provision was issued to the Gotei 13, and a captain proficiency examination was urgently opened. This had a great impact on those who had prepared themselves. The disasters that struck both the material world and Soul Society were an unnerving sign of the “collapse of the world”, where the balance between the material world and Soul Society would crumble, all order would be lost, and the two worlds would instantly terminate. Also, a special order was issued to 10th squad captain Toushiro Hitsugaya…

Before Ichigo and Senna, men appeared who identified themselves as the “Dark Ones” who wield the power of darkness. Ganryu, who is the leader of the “Dark Ones” is the mastermind behind the plan for worldwide collapse. As the power of darkness grows stronger, Ichigo and his friends will soon face an intense battle with high stakes. One must wonder for what reason do the “Dark Ones” persistently target Senna… One hour until the collapse of the world. The final countdown until the decisive battle between the “Dark Ones” and the shinigami has begun. Will Senna, and Ichigo and his friends be able to protect the world in time?

So let the countdown begin. The movie officially airs in Japan on December 16th 2006, so only nine more days to go! Hopefully this movie won’t be a huge letdown like many other highly acclaimed anime movies based off of a current series (I’m looking at you, Naruto). By the looks of things, it certainly won’t disappoint in the fanservice area at the very least with it’s nice and elaborate cast.

Blizzard Entertainment released their highly anticipated “Before the Storm” patch (also known as WoW 2.0) today for their gigantic MMORPG, World of Warcraft. The patch added a plethora of new content such as the new Honor system, the Arena battlegrounds, the new 41 point talent trees, and more. The bad part about this patch is pretty much the same as any other past major patch that Blizzard has released for World of Warcraft – massive server instability, extended server downtime, and everyone’s favorite: destroyed User Interfaces. But this patch is perhaps the most unforgiving on mods, as many have been flatout killed due to changes to game mechanics (ie: Decursive), and many more cannot even be force loaded anymore due to incompatibility with the new patch. Blizzard took the extra step this time however, and in addition to all of the above, most macros have become obsolete due to completely different coding methods being introduced (ie: /script UseInventory{13} used to activate your top trinket slot, but the command for that is now /use 13).

My thoughts on the patch? As a Mage, I love the changes to the Fire tree. Fire Mage PvE raiding damage will no doubt increase even with the changes to the Ignite mechanics. The aoe change seemed a bit uncalled for to me (especially when many encounters in the current end-game require classes to aoe more than 10 mobs at once), as was putting Counterspell on the global cooldown, but I’m sure Mages will learn to adapt. The 41 point talents were clearly not balanced around level 60 PvP gameplay. Every class’ DPS (save Warriors, poor Warriors) were dramatically increased while surviveability stayed practically the same. Prior to this patch, killing other players in literally seconds was not unheard of, and I’m afraid that with this patch, WoW’s PvP will be tilted even further towards the “lets see who can 2-3 shot who first!” region – hopefully this will be fixed when The Burning Crusade is released, as the Stamina inflation on Closed Beta is quite disgusting. The downrank healing change will be interesting to see on fights such as Sapphiron, as will decursing since the Decursive mod is now dead and buried.

People that have been attempting to search for updates to their mods in the past two days have no doubt run into problems, as many popular mod hosting websites such as Curse-Gaming have been getting slammed on their bandwidth. I’ve compiled a list of the “essential” mods for the typical raider, although I’m still missing the Nurfed action bars (which have not been completed yet as of today). Regarding FPS lag and constant “clicking” sound bugs:

There’s a fix for both now. On the FPS issue, apparently Blizzard stuck the WDB cache folder into the wrong directory, and it wasn’t being populated correctly. Noggyh from the Elitist Jerks forum wrote:

Previous to this patch 2.0, players had a wdb file, that contained a cache of items/mobs/etc. In 2.0 Blizzard moved it. It should be in the new Cache folder, but mine wasnt. I manually added a WDB, then an enGB folder into the cache folder (Cache\WDB\enGB) and my framerate went up, my network traffic went down, and I got a bunch of cache files put into that folder by the wow client.

By creating a WDB folder inside your Cache folder, and then enGB folder (\World of Warcraft\Cache\WDB\enGB); your enGB folder will get populated with:

Fix for the enUS client

After creating my WDB\enUS flder and starting wow a coupel times it was never populated so i went looking for my WDB folder. Turns out it was empty but located in -
C:\World of Warcraft\Data\enUS\WDB

I deleted just the empty WDB folder located in C:\World of Warcraft\Data\enUS\ with the correct C:\World of Warcraft\Cache\WDB\enUS created restarted wow and boom! populated.

See if thats any help.

Next up is the annoying (and FPS damaging) clicking sound that you’ve no doubt experienced first hand if you’re a raider. There’s a workaround that someone was gracious enough to create (his name escapes me at the moment, sorry) and it was uploaded onto the Curse-Gaming site. Unfortunently, Curse is still having extreme bandwidth issues due to millions of people hitting their site, so I’ve uploaded it for you folks. Simply download the workaround and dump it into to your Interface\Addons folder.

Alterac Valley is so awesome when you’re stuck in it after the game has already ended for 40 minutes.

EDIT: Speaking of massive server instability, the game has been nigh unplayable during prime time ever since the patch landed on Tuesday. Even dead during the night at 4am, the server still fails. As of this writing at 5:50am EST 12/7/06, I’ve been stuck in an Alterac Valley for 40 minutes after the game had already ended. I’ve also found out that if I exit out of the game, I’ll still be stuck in the same AV indefinently when I log back in. So, my only form of recourse at the moment is to stay logged into the game and pray to the WoW gods for a cluster restart of the servers.

While we’re on the subject of Arcueid and Saber, this is hardcore. I’m a huge Saber fan, but a 480,000 Yen (approx $4,100 USD!) Saber figurine is a bit out of my league.

In other news, Mirror Moon and Revolve Translations have released an update to their Tsukihime English patch. The update corrects many grammar and typo problems, as well as a bunch of minor bugs. Those downloading the update are advised to finish their routes before applying the update, as the Mirror Moon site gave out the following warning:

Warning! It appears that v1.1 breaks compatibility with the savegames from v1.0. Not all, but some of your savegames will crash the game the moment you reach the end of a script. If you encounter this problem, there currently are only two ways to solve this: Either you start from the beginning and use the ‘Skip parts previously read option’ (in the game options menu) to quickly skip to the part where you left off, or you reinstall v1.0 back and finish your route.

We are very sorry for this blunder, it would appear that we have understimated the stupidity of NScripter’s and ONScripter’s save algorithms. We will try to find a better solution for this problem, until then we recommend not to updated to v1.1 until you have finished a route and are ready to start the game from the beginning. Note that only the savegames themselves do not work, your settings and scores will transfer properly if you update (or downgrade).

So, I finally broke down and downloaded Soukou no Strain last night. First impressions? Well, I’m currently on a six episode watching marathon, and I don’t want to stop. God, why does there have to be so many good anime series this season? I’ll never be able to study for my exams at this rate T_T.

PS: For those that havn’t heard yet, the Mai-Otome Zwei OVA #1 has been released and subbed by Doremi-Fansubs. The OVA takes place directly after the events in the first Mai-Otome with seemingly the entire old Otome crew making a graceful return.

I have two incomplete papers due within 3 days, and following directly after that deadline are 4 exams that eagerly await me. It’s times like this that I’m tempted to re-watch Saikano just so I can emo out after the Akemi scene in episode 9 and razorblade myself – but that’s a story for another time T_T.

So aside from Bakumatsu and Code Geass (Special note on episode 8: In addition to having the worst fashion sense I have ever seen, Zero’s band of friends, now aptly named “The Black Knights” must have been high on crack when they agreed to set a new world record on “cheesiest intro that Exertim has ever seen”. Those dastardly Brits must surely be laughing their asses off quaking in their boots now!), I’ve also recently begun to dabble into the magical moe! world that is Kanon. I must admit, I’m a bit hooked on the series now, I suppose I’m just a sucker for these types of anime. The level of moeness that Ayu reaches will surely cause the destruction of the world O_O.

In other news, Fate/Stay Night fans that are literate in the Japanese language will be glad to know that Type-Moon is working in collaboration with Nitroplus on a pre-equal named “Fate/Zero“, which is set to take place 10 years before the events in Fate/Stay Night, during the 4th Holy Grail War (The war that Emiya Shirō’s father fought in with Saber as his Servant). Keep in mind that this is much like Kara No Kyokai, as it is a book, not a visual novel or anime series. Those of us that aren’t able to read Japanese will have to settle for summaries that will no doubt go up sooner or later. In addition to this, it’s also hard to say whether the story that will take place in Fate/Zero will be of canonical nature or not, as I believe it is Nitroplus that will be doing the actual storytelling, not Type-Moon. Fate/Zero will be available in stores all around Japan on December 12th, approximately 8 days from now.

This was an above average episode, with a decent amount of action, although the majority of the episode revolves around Karen and the Eleven’s history, along with development for Lelouch’s alias as Zero. Animation quality is the same as the past 3 episodes – superb. Sunrise continues to deliver the goods!

Suzuka is under heavy interrogation by the Britannian officials for his supposed murder of Prince Clovis. Suzuka denies (naturally) that he had any involvement in the issue, and Jeremiah quickly produces a bagged handgun that he claims that the murderer had left behind – a handgun with Suzuka’s fingerprints on it. On top of that, because Suzuka was the son of the former Japanese Prime Minister, many suspect he may have killed Clovis out of revenge for the invasion of Japan seven years ago. It also appears that only Suzuka can pilot the Lancelot Knightframe, as every other pilot that has attempted to have gotten nothing but slow and jerky responses. Suzuka had a synchronization rate of 94%, by far the highest out of all the other potential pilots. All this talk about mecha synchronization is seriously reminding me of Evangelion and Gundam Wing =(

Code name: Wing Zero

Following the public announcement of Clovis’ death, Karen heads to the designated area that she was told to go to by Zero. Karen and her band of buddies board a train, and are told to move to the first car. There, they meet Zero, aka Lelouch in all of his glory – and in glory, I mean one of the corniest costumes I have ever seen in my life. Zero’s costume looks like a bad copy of Darth Vader’s suit that lack the colorful buttons that decorate Vader’s chestpiece. Oh, and I spy with my little eye Pizza Hut!

I could totally go for a Stuffed Crust right about now.

Clovis’ funeral is coming up, and Zero plans to use this as an opportunity to rescue Suzuka. Clovis must be rolling in his grave, overshadowed and used even in death. Zero makes a flashy appearance in his new awesome costume, ontop of Clovis’ funeral car no less. The Brittanian army immediately surrounds the carriage with Sutherland Knightmare Frames and takes aim on Zero, but before they fire, Lelouch reveals what is hidden within the vehicle – the supposed “Poison gas bomb” that we saw in episode 1. Of course, the Britannian army is completely unaware that the bomb was a dud. Even when faced with the entire surrounding crowd held as hostages, Jeremiah refuses to let Suzuka go, claiming that he could not hand over Prince Clovis’ murderer. Zero replies that if Jeremiah killed him, he would sully his reputation with “Orange”. Jeremiah looks on confused, along with the rest of his men. Lelouch follows up with his make believe bluff and forces Jeremiah to let them go with his Geass power. Not only does Jeremiah set Suzuka and Zero free, but he also fights his against his Purist subordinates that try to stop them. So begins the “Orange” conspiracy. Poor Jeremiah, accused of a conspiracy that doesn’t even exist.

Jeremiah seems to have a bad case of red eye.

Lelouch attempts to recruit Suzuka (who is still oblivious that Zero is in fact Lelouch) to join forces with him, but Suzuka refuses, stating that he prefers to change things through peaceful solutions instead of fighting. After a bit more talking, Suzuka leaves a bewildered Lelouch behind. In other words, Sunrise has just recreated Kira Yamato and Athrun Zala. You know, the Kira Yamato that refused to fight, but still ended up killing hundreds if not thousands of people? Yeah, that Kira.

A full version of the second song “Kimi to no Asu” still hasn’t been found yet to my knowledge. As always, if you enjoy the song, show support to Jyukai by purchasing her CD’s over at CDJapan!

I think by now I can safely say that Code Geass will have a massive fanbase before the series is over and done with. Why, you ask? Typical Sunrise fanservice of course! Not that I’m complaining, oh no. As usual, my posts on these episodes containt spoilers, so don’t read any further if you havn’t seen the actual episode yet. So we’re back in Clovis’ Headquarters where we left off on episode #2. Lelouch forces answers out of Clovis involving the murder of his mother via his Geass powers, and finds out that Princess Cornelia and Prince Schneizer seems to possess more knowledge on the matter. Lelouch absorbs this information, and then, while Clovis begs for his life, executes Clovis via gunshot to the head. It’s good to know that not all anime protagonists are wimps that refuse to kill others.

We then skip ahead and are now at Lelouch’s school. The Britanian officials are covering up the massacre that they inflicted upon Shinjiku yesterday by announcing that a terrorist group had triggered a gigantic poison gas attack, therefore killing many of the ghetto’s inhabitants. After conversing with his classmates, a familiar face from the Shinjiku incident from yesterday appears. Karen (the pilot of the Glasglow Knightmare Frame unit in episodes 01 and 02) is revealed to be a student. She seems to have been covering up her absences by claiming that she was “sick” (real creative there Sunrise). Lelouch abuses his Geass powers to extract information about the Eleven terrorist group out of her, however when he orders her to not mention the Shinjiku incident to anyone, Karen somehow resists the powers and immediately grows suspicious of Lelouch.

That’s a mighty tasty looking sandwich you have there.

Following that suspicion, we are introduced to Lelouch’s sister, Nanalya. Nanalya appears to be blind, due to witnessing the horrific murder of her mother at a young age. Lelouch asks Karen to join him at the School Council clubhouse, an event which causes all of her classmates to mistaken as a “date”. After partying a bit at the clubhouse, Lelouch accidently sprays Karen with a huge splash of Champagne directly out of the bottle. Karen heads over to take a shower, Lelouch brings her a change of clothing…and well I’m sure you know what that usually leads to.

Karen initially suspected Lelouch as the person that was anonoymously giving out the orders to the Eleven group in Shinjiku yesterday, but she soon drops her suspicions when a recorded message created by Lelouch earlier calls in and gives her a new set of orders. At the end of the series, it is revealed to us that the Britanian officials have nailed a scapegoat to Prince Clovis’ murder – Suzaku Kururugi.

Decent episode, not much action in this one aside from the Britanic forces fighting one another after Clovis’ death. More characters are introduced, and the stage is definently set for some action after Lelouch sees that his childhood friend is still well and alive, although pinned with a false charge of murder. Animation is still exceptional, a bit too exceptional perhaps at certain parts (FANSERVICE HAHA). So in short, watch this anime. Right now. Both Shinsen-Subs and GG fansubs have picked up on the series, so you can be assured that Code Geass will be translated fairly quickly.

So, if you’re an advid Type-Moon fan like myself, you’ve probably heard that the super awesome people over at Mirror Moon and Revolve Translations have recently released their Tsukihime english patch. And let me tell you, it is glorious. For those of us that aren’t Japanese literate, this is pretty much a godsent gift. Prior to the patch, I relied mostly on the written summaries made by Evospace over at Moonlit World / Beast’s Lair, so while I had a general understanding of what happened and whatnot, nothing could have prepared me for the extreme amounts of detail and depth that Type-Moon goes into for each and every character and route.

So wait, what exactly IS Tsukihime you ask? It’s a visual novel (think of it as a novel with images – lots of images, and you’re able to choose and change the story based on your actions) written by Type-Moon, who have also written the visual novel Fate/Stay Night. Tsukihime was also made into a 12 episode anime series back in 2003 by Geneon Entertainment, and the official anime release name for it is “Shingetsutan Tsukihime”. More information about it can be found at AniDB. I’ve had the patch for a few days now, and have been playing the game on and off. So far I’ve completed the Ciel True and Good routes, and have just started on the Far Side storyline with the Hisui route. Mirror Moon did an astounding job with the translation, and while there were grammar errors here and there, it’s practically to be expected when it’s such a huge translation project – and they aren’t exactly that noticeable anyways.
